Match the technology to your supply
The single most useful decision rule is this: RO handles dissolved salts and hardness, UV handles microorganisms, and UF handles suspended particles and some microbes without electricity. Your supply decides which of these you need.
- Low-TDS municipal supply, microbial concern only - UV or UV + UF is often enough
- Moderate municipal supply - RO + UV is the common choice
- Municipal alternating with tanker water - RO + UV + UF handles the variation
- Borewell or high-TDS supply - RO with correct membrane and a TDS controller
- Frequent power cuts with a stored supply - a UF stage keeps working unpowered
