RO Pump Not Stopping: Why It Runs Continuously and How to Fix It
A continuously running RO pump may mean the tank is still filling, water production is restricted, or the automatic shut-off system is faulty. Here is how to narrow down the problem safely.

Why your RO pump is not stopping
An RO pump normally stops when the purifier reaches its model-specific tank-full or pressure condition. If it keeps running, either the tank is not filling properly or the shut-off system is not detecting or responding to that condition. A recently emptied tank can explain a longer run; repeated operation with no water use needs investigation.
The main distinction is whether the tank remains partly empty or seems full while the pump continues. The first points towards restricted production or water loss; the second towards sensing, valve or control faults. Sound alone cannot confirm that the pump is running: some models also have flushing cycles. Check the display and operating sequence against the manual.
Safe checks you can do at home
Inspect only accessible external parts. Do not remove covers, disconnect tubing, open filter housings or adjust internal switches. Never open a powered or pressurised housing.
Check recent use: was the tank emptied, or is someone still drawing water? Stop dispensing and compare the refill behaviour with the model manual, not a universal time limit.
Check the source supply: confirm water is available and the normal inlet valve is open. Look for visible kinks in accessible inlet tubing without pulling connections.
Look for external leaks beneath the purifier, around visible joints and near the tap. A dripping tap or leak can prevent the tank reaching its stopping condition.
Check indicators and output: note warning lights, whether purified water production seems unusually slow, and whether the tank ever indicates full. These observations help diagnosis but do not prove water quality.
If there is a burning smell, electrical noise, water near wiring or prolonged running without output, stop using the unit. Isolate power only from a dry, safely accessible switch; otherwise keep clear and seek help. Close the inlet only if safely accessible.
Likely faults—and what actually fixes them
If the tank never fills, possible causes include inadequate inlet supply, restricted prefilters, membrane fouling, reduced pump performance or a leak. A technician should check supply conditions, pressure and production before recommending replacement parts. Filter maintenance should follow the manual and actual condition, not a blanket replacement interval.
If the tank fills but the pump continues, a high-pressure switch, float sensor, control circuit or associated wiring may be faulty, depending on the design. Some systems also rely on an automatic shut-off valve or inlet solenoid. These require model-specific testing rather than adjustment by guesswork.
A faulty check valve, pressure-tank issue or small leak can cause pressure loss and repeated restarting. Incorrect reject-flow control can also affect production. Do not clamp the drain line, bypass valves or alter internal controls to force the pump to stop.
When to call a technician—and when testing is needed
Book a technician if continuous operation persists after the external checks, the tank never fills, or the pump runs despite a full-tank indication. Share the model number, recent service history, warning indicators and whether the issue is continuous running or repeated restarting.
Take a problem photo showing the display and any externally visible leak, without opening the cabinet or approaching wet electrical equipment. A short video can help distinguish pump noise from water-flow noise.
Pump behaviour does not establish drinking-water safety. If contamination is suspected, suitable laboratory testing is needed; TDS alone cannot confirm safety. Repairing the shut-off fault is not proof that the water is safe.
